Day 2 – Lake Manyara National Park
After breakfast drive to Lake Manyara with lunch boxes from your hotel for game drive in Lake Manyara.
Manyara Region takes its name from Lake Manyara, which is one of the major lakes formed in ancient times by the Great Rift Valley. It is the only Region in Tanzania to be bisected into two by the Great Rift Valley. It is a major wildlife water source and is, therefore, an essential part of the wildlife ecosystems of Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Tarangire National Park. In addition, Lake Manyara is the country’s largest breeding ground for tens of thousands of flamingo.
Kitela Lodge rises up on the hillside of a valley with beautiful views of a coffee plantation and a waterfall within the incredible highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It consists of 20 colonial style cottages surrounded by beautiful gardens, a coffee plantation and a working farm. In the setting of the majestic mountains, this exclusive hotel is a haven of peace and comfort with all the attentions and the luxury of a traditional country villa. The relaxation the spa offers and its swimming pool are the perfect contrast to the intense excursions and safaris available from the lodge to the Ngorongoro area. Overnight at Kitela lodge on (FB)
Day 3 –Ngorongoro Crater-Serengeti NP
After breakfast drive to Ngorongoro Conservation area with lunch boxes from the lodge. Descend down to the Crater floor for half day game drive.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers 2286 sq km and encompasses the volcanic area around the Ngorongoro Crater - including the still active volcano of Oldonyo Lengai and the famous Olduvai Gorge. Its center piece, the Ngorongoro Crater, is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and the first sight of it is breathtaking. The floor of the crater is only 100 sq. miles but is home to around 30,000 animals with a high concentration of predators.
The crater supports up to 25,000 large mammals. Grazers dominate: zebra, wildebeest - accounting for almost half the animals - gazelle, buffalo, eland, hartebeest and wart hog. Giraffe, for example, stay away because there is insufficient food at tree level; topi because they compete directly with wildebeest. An odd feature of the crater elephants is that they are almost exclusively bulls. Breeding herds - comprising large numbers of females and young with a few attendant older males - are probably unable to find sufficient quality food in the crater.
Overnight at Serengeti acacia camp on (FB).
Serengeti Acacia Tented Camp is an intimate safari luxury tented camp set in the heart of Serengeti National Park, offering guests the perfect blend of old African charm and elegance. This camp, tucked beneath an acacia around Serengeti Plain, has breathtaking views of the Serengeti National Park’s savannah plains; here you will capture the old romance of Africa, experiencing its original charm.
Serengeti Acacia Camp was established to serve a wide range of clients looking for a highly qualified safari operator who can provide the best safari experience in Africa with the most comfortable set-up and amenities.
Day 4- Central Seronera
A stay or visit to the Seronera area, in the very heart of Serengeti National Park, involves a bit of compromise. The area southeast of Seronera becomes the center of wildlife viewing during the December-April rain season as vast herds of wildebeest congregate here in this period. Seronera is also known as predator capital of the world, sightings of leopard, cheetah and lion is (almost) guaranteed. The peak of wildlife and visitor activity is between March and May, the period in which the wildebeest and their entourage are found in the area. It also is a pleasant area to be as it offers a variety of different habitats and water is available year round. The upsides, abundant wildlife, great accessibility and many facilities, come with a price. It is important to realize that parts of this area experience very high visitor traffic. The area may attract a serious clustering of safari vehicles, especially when it concerns big cat sightings. In unfortunate circumstances you may see a single lion, whilst being joined by a pack of 20 safari vehicles.
Wildlife viewing near Seronera
Most safari game drives concentrate along the Seronera River and with excellent reason: lion sightings are common and the riverbank is home to one of the world's densest population of leopards. The sausage trees and umbrella thorns rank among the best places in Africa to search for leopards - there are too few tall trees for these elusive creatures to be well-hidden. Severe lion prides in the area have also taken to the trees regularly in recent years, particularly during the rains. A very special sight!
The kopjes near Seronera also offer lion sightings regularly. Especially the Moru Koppies provide very good lion and cheetah sightings. The area also accommodates around 25 black rhinos, offspring of a herd of seven that migrated across from Ngorongoro. The vast plains south of the Seronera River, often known as the Serengeti Plains, are good for cheetah’s sightings. Ecologically, the plains running immediately southeast from Seronera form a continuum with the Ndutu and Ngorongoro Crater Area, comprising open grassland dotted with several clusters of koppies. The plains rising towards the Kamuyo Hills west of the Seronera River are good for spotted hyena, cheetah and elephants.
Fed by the Mbalageti River immediately northeast of Moru Koppies, the small, saline Lake Magadi (a common name for lakes, as 'magadi' just means soda or salt) often supports large numbers of aquatic birds, including thousands of flamingos when the water level is suitable. The Retima Hippo Pool is home to up to 100 hippo’s, which can be seen basking near the confluence of the Seronera and Grumeti rivers about 15 kilometers north of the park headquarters. Day 5 -Seronera to South Ndutu area
After breakfast drive to south Ndutu area. Ndutu Region forms part of the northern section of Ngorongoro Conservation Area and stretches to the unfenced southern reaches of the Serengeti National Park, a meeting point between these two incredible wilderness areas. This section of the park is made up of rolling grasslands peppered with alkaline lakes that attract flocks of flamingos, as well as acacia woodlands Overnight at Lake Masek tented camp on (FB)
Nestling between the prime wildlife areas of central and southern Serengeti. The area is witness of the Great Migration from December to March. This luxurious tented camp enables guests to be within reach of the Great Migration and to explore remote, beautiful corners of the Serengeti with excellent resident game.
Day 6- South Ndutu Area
After breakfast drive to Lake Ndutu Serengeti. There’s year-round resident wildlife (such as giraffe, elephant, hyena and various antelope species) in the Ndutu Region, and you can spot animals around the waterholes during the dry season from June to November. Look out for the six cat species – lion, cheetah, leopard, serval, African wild cat and caracal – that are present throughout the year.
The best months to visit the Ndutu Region are from December, when the Great Migration herds start to arrive from the north, until April when the millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle have trekked northwards again. In the early months of the year – with a peak in February – the wildebeest herds are calving on the verdant grassy plains: thousands upon thousands of baby animals are born every day, attracting the attention of cheetah, lion and hyena.
Highlights
Wildebeest calving season:
A big draw of the Ndutu Region is to see the full circle of the Great Migration, from the return of the herds to graze in December, and then the calving which takes place in January and February, and then the departure of the herds again in April as they start making their journey northwards.
Calving season is particularly dramatic: a million wildebeest give birth to 8000 babies every day, and as these newborns take their first steps, they’re targeted by lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena.
The prime game viewing spot in the Ndutu Region is around Lake Ndutu, where enormous herds congregate between December and April to graze and calve. The forests and granite kopjes around Lake Ndutu are also home to lots of game outside of the migration months.
Sightings of six species of cats – leopard, lion, cheetah, caracal, African wildcat and surval – are a big highlight of visiting the Ndutu Region. You can spot the cats throughout the year, but the best viewing is during the calving months of January and February, when these predators pick on the fledgling baby animals. Overnight at Lake Masek tented camp
Day 7- South Ndutu Area
A trip to Ndutu is not just about wildlife and landscapes – there’s incredible cultural heritage to explore too. Lying within the Ndutu Region, Olduvai Gorge (also known as Oldupai – the correct Maasai spelling of the word) is one of the world’s most significant pale anthropological sites, thanks to the discovery of the earliest evidence of the existence of our human ancestors. Visit the dramatic ravine and spend some time in the museum to learn about the fascinating excavations and discoveries that have taken place here. A visit to Olduvai Gorge should be combined with a stop at the nearby Shifting Sands: mysterious and beautiful dunes formed of volcanic ash that move with the winds.
For adventurous travelers, you can do multi-day walking safaris starting in the Ndutu Region and heading into the highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and for the very intrepid, you can combine the walking safari with an ascent up the active volcano of Ol Doinyo Lengai.
Day trips to the Ngorongoro Crater are a highlight of staying in the Ndutu Region. The remains of a massive volcano, the Ngorongoro is one of the most superb wilderness areas on the continent, and boasts some of the greatest populations of animals – particularly predators – found in Africa.
